Foreign Students Scramble for Visas - Olds Welcoming Communities
Until Tuesday, Christian Fierro was excited about leaving his job, home and family in Mexico and moving to Edmonton to study business at the University of Alberta.

But the new visa requirements for Mexican and Czech visitors designed to stem the flow of refugee claims now have him worried about his academic future.

Because it typically takes between two to three months to receive a visa, Fierro is afraid he won't get one in time for his Aug. 24 flight to Canada.

"I need to move fast--I can't afford to lose my MBA. I have already quit my job. I have a plane ticket in my hands and everything," Fierro said from his home in Ocotlan, Mexico.
